Downloading Stuffit Expander Using A Web Browser

PC Users

If you are using a PC (IBM Compatible Computer) with Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, downloading a copy of Stuffit Expander or WinZip is also a simple matter. Both applications are readily available on the World Wide Web as executable (.exe) files. You will simply need to download the file to a directory on your hard disk or to a floppy disk and then Run the .exe file to install the software on your computer's hard disk. Follow these steps.

  1. Log on to the Internet and Open your web browser.
  2. Connect to http://www.aladdinsys.com/consumer/expander1.html to download a copy of the freeware version of Stuffit Expander for Windows.
  3. If you prefer, you can connect to http://www.winzip.com to download a trial copy of the WinZip shareware application. (The choice is yours…just be sure to pay the shareware fee if you decide to keep WinZip after the trial period is over.)
  4. Click on one of the download hypertext links on the product homepage to initiate the download process. Note: If you are downloading Stuffit Expander, be sure to select a binary site not a uuencoded site! Second Note: If you are downloading WinZip, select the winzip95.exe file if you use Windows 95 or the winzip31.exe file if you use Windows 3.1x.
  5. When the Save As dialog box appears, select the folder/directory where you want to save the file and click on Save. (Write down this location here so you can find the file when you are finished!)________________________________________________
  6. When the file has been downloaded, close your web browser and log off the Internet.
  7. Open the File Manager (Windows 3.1x) or Windows Explorer (Windows 95) and navigate to the directory/folder where the file was saved.
  8. Double-click on the SITEX10.EXE or WINZIP.EXE file you downloaded and follow the onscreen prompts to install the software on your computer's hard disk. (I would recommend that you accept the default install location.)
  9. When the installation is complete, proceed to page 2.7.7 to configure Stuffit Expander (or WinZip) as the helper application that will automatically open when you download a .zip file with your web browser.
