Installing Stuffit Expander

Macintosh Users

Installing Stuffit Expander is a bit different for users of the Macintosh versions of Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. Stuffit Expander is a freeware program that is widely available for downloading on the World Wide Web, but, only in a compressed form. It's the old "chicken and egg" problem. You can download and freely use Stuffit Expander but you must to already have Stuffit Expander installed to download and unstuff the program.

Fortunately, there is an easy solution. Included (without charge) with the course materials, is a copy of the Stuffit Expander 4.0.1 Installer file stored on a floppy disk. Follow these step-by-step instructions to install Stuffit Expander on your Macintosh computer.

  1. Restart your computer with the extensions off by holding down the Shift key while you select Restart from the Special menu in the top row. (This is a good practice to follow whenever you install new software!)
  2. When the system software finishes loading, insert the Installer Disk into your disk drive.
  3. Double-Click on the Stuffit Expander 4.0.1 Installer icon.
  4. Click on Continue, Continue, Install and Install when the dialog boxes appear.
  5. When the Installation Was Successful message appears, click on OK.
  6. The Stuffit Expander folder will appear on the screen.
  7. Click on Read Us First for instructions on how to use the software.
  8. Close the Read Us… file and the Stuffit… folder by clicking in the close boxes.
  9. Restart the computer (don't hold down the Shift key this time!)
  10. Open your Hard Disk and you will see that a new folder named Stuffit Expander 4.0.1 Folder and a Stuffit Expander alias icon have been installed on your computer.
  11. Follow the instructions in the Read Us First file to use the software to unstuff downloaded files.
  12. If you will be using Stuffit Expander with Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, proceed to the step-by-step instructions on page 2.7.8 for configuring your web browser to automatically open Stuffit Expander when a stuffed file is downloaded.
