Configuring Netscape

for Stuffit Expander/WinZip

PC

If you want to use Stuffit Expander for Windows (freeware) or WinZip (shareware-be sure to pay the shareware fee if you decide to keep the software…) as the default helper application to unzip compressed files downloaded from the World Wide Web, you will need to tell Netscape where to find the software. Follow these step-by-step instructions. Note: It is assumed that you have already downloaded and installed Stuffit Expander or WinZip to your hard disk. If this is not the case, do that before completing this procedure.

  1. Open Netscape.
  2. Click on the Options menu in the top row.
  3. Select General Preferences from the pop-down menu.
  4. Click on the tab labeled Helpers.
  5. Select the application/zip entry by clicking once on the row. (It will turn blue.)
  6. Click on the Browse button.
  7. Navigate to the location where you installed Stuffit Expander or WinZip (this will usually be C:\STUFFIT\EXPANDER.EXE or C:\WINZIP\WINZIP.EXE or something similar unless you chose to install the application in another application.
  8. Select STUFFIT.EXE or WINZIP.EXE and click on Open.
  9. The Helper screen should reappear on the screen.
  10. The path to the helper application should appear in the box in the lower portion of the screen. (C:\STUFFIT\EXPANDER.EXE or C:\WINZIP\WINZIP.EXE)
  11. Click on the Launch the Application button in the Action: row.
  12. Click on Apply (if it is present on the screen) and then on OK.
  13. Reopen the Options / Helpers screen and check to see that Expander or WinZip has been selected as the helper application that will automatically open when Netscape encounters a .zip compressed file on the Web.
