Background Information: Boolean Operators

Before you make the next pass through the search engines, you will take some time to gather some background information on Boolean Operators.

Understanding the Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT, NEAR, etc) that are used by search engines can make your web searching much more productive. Simply by adding one or more of the Boolean operators to your search string, you can often reduce the number of hits returned by the search engine from millions down to a handful, all of which will be directly related to your search topic.

This activity is not intended to be a definitive course on Boolean Logic. That is a topic which could easily be a three unit course in itself. In this activity, you will be exploring several websites that offer a concise overview of Boolean operators. This is another excellent example of how the web has self-documented itself.

Boolean Logic and Boolean Operators

Examine the Boolean logic websites. Record your observations in your digital logbook.
