"Kid Friendly" Web Search Sites

Study Web (http://www.studyweb.com/) - Search the collection of over 118,000 research quality URL's that have been categorized and reviewed.

Yahooligans (http://www.yahooligans.com/) - A Yahoo like category based search tool that is touted as "The Web Guide for Kids".

Education World (http://www.education-world.com) -This is a search tool that focuses on educational related items. It leans towards professionals, but has a great deal of information for anybody.

Ask Jeeves for Kids (http://www.ajkids.com/) - Ask Jeeves for Kids is a tool that allows students to enter searches in a question style format. It then lists results in a format that is fairly easy to read.

Awesome Library (http://www.awesomelibrary.com/) - Awesome Library organizes the Web with 14,000 carefully reviewed resources, including the top 5 percent in education.

Kids Click (http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/KidsClick!/) - KidsClick! was created by a group of librarians at the Ramapo Catskill Library System. It allows for keyword search as well as category browsing.

Searchopolis (http://www.searchopolis.com) - Searchopolis is a search tool that gives the user "the Web's most powerful filtered search engine, a beefed-up curriculum directory, piles of reference material, and today's most up-to-the-minute information." Users can search by keyword or subject and can search the encarta encyclopedia online.

Onekey (http://www.onekey.com/) - Onekey is a kid safe search engine that offers simple boolean login on the main search screen as well as the ability to click on subject headings.

SearchEDU (http://www.searchedu.com/) - This is a wonderful education related search tool. Over 20 million university and education pages indexed and ranked in order of popularity.

 

Social Studies "Country Information" Sites

Travelers Gazetteer (http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~c-allen/Countries/index.htm#C) - This is a World Wide Gazetteer. It contains links to many informational and recreational sites for numerous countries.

Travelroads (http://www.travelroads.com/) - Travelroads makes it easy for you to find tour operators and request free brochures. It is a great place to find current vacation and cultural information for countries around the world.

Lonely Planet - This is an excellent source for current information on the countries of the world.

CIA World Factbook - All the countries of the world are represented at this site. Look here for statistical country information and flags.

City Net - A great source of information on countries and cities of the world.

Mungo Park - Take interactive journeys to countries around the world.

E-Conflict - Online geographic encyclopedia that contains maps, demographic information, links to current news and weather and the national anthem of each country.

How Far Is It? - This service uses data from the US Census and a supplementary list of cities around the world to find the latitude and longitude of two places, and then calculates the distance between them (as the crow flies). It also provides a map showing the two places, using the Xerox PARC Map Server.

Culture Quest - A limited source of information about the cultures of different countries.

Yahooligans Country Section - Information source for countries around the world.

Infonation - InfoNation is an easy-to-use, two-step database that allows you to view and compare the most up-to-date statistical data for the Member States of the United Nations.

Geocities Travel Section - Country information available from Geocities.

Yahoo Countries - Country information available from Yahoo.

Library of Congress Country Studies - Most books in the series deal with a particular foreign country, describing and analyzing its political, economic, social, and national security systems and institutions, and examining the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factor.

SOAR - Searchable Online Archive of Recipes - This is a collection of over 60,000 recipes that can be searched in a variety of ways. Also, recipes can be accessed by country.

The Animal Dissection Page - Here is a place you can dissect many different animals using the internet.

Lawnman's Amazing Grasshopper Page - Everything you wanted to know about Grasshoppers.

Insect Body Parts - Helps you learn the body parts of an insect.

Virtual Frog Dissection - Learn about frog anatomy by dissecting a frog online.

Electronic Zoo - The best animal resources on the internet.

Human Anatomy - Take a look at the inside of the human body. This site features an interactive model of the human body. This site requires the Shockwave plugin.

Human Anatomy Online - Uses text, illustrations and animations to study the human body.

Journey North - A global study of wildlife migration.

A Thousand Friends of Frogs - Discusses frogs as bio-indicators, our environment and better stewardship practices.

National Fish and Wildlife Foundation - This site offers current information on what's going on at the National Wildlife Federation.

Zoo Net - This is an extensive list of animal information including pictures and information.

A Hotlist on Living Things - You COULD look for books or magazines to find out about Living Things, but why not use the power of the Internet instead? The links here will get you started.
